Sitton's Student Council is in its third year in its current form.  Between 21-24 students in grades 3-5 participate each year.  All students in grades 3-5 who have at least a 90% attendance rate and consistently demonstrate Sitton's core values are eligible to self-nominate themselves.  Classroom teachers confirm if the self-nominated students are eligible. Then nominees prepare a campaign speech using a speech organizer and deliver their speech during lunch in front of grade-level peers.  After speeches are delivered, grade levels vote and the 7 or 8 students with the most votes per grade are elected.  Once elected council members and their families/guardians are required to sign and commit to our school's Core Value Contract. Our mission is to harness the leadership that already exists within our students and prepare them to be strong public speakers who have the agency, organizing and advocacy skills needed to be successful in creating the change they wish to see in their community.

 

 

Students in student council:

1. Participate in democratic decision making using Robert's Rules
2. Hone public speaking skills, co-lead school assemblies, and are core value ambassadors
3. Write proposals, newsletter articles, and create social media posts
4. Learn about and actively work towards achieving the UN's Global Goals and Eco-School USA Eco-Certification 
5. Have fun learning about non-profit work by completing Oregon Community Foundation's Community 101 program
