Edible Garden

We have an edible educational garden space at the west end of our playing field, along N. Reno St. When possible, a class harvests produce as part of their lesson and it goes back to the classroom with them to become part of a cooking project or a science investigation. When abundant produce is available, we provide produce for distribution to families.

We want every Sitton child to experience the garden as a place of engagement with nature and the real world of work, and be curious about the relationships between plants, animals, humans, and their physical environment.

For the 2023-24 school year, our goal is to get every classroom out to the garden for 3 lessons during the school year, with additional experiences available during recess time and in the after school cooking/gardening classes that SUN school offers. With continued support from a Growing Gardens grant and volunteers, we built a 10’ x 12’ garden shed next to the garden to store our tools and potentially serve as a spring greenhouse. The school hired a part-time Community Agent, Merri Whipps, and asked her to allot time to garden education. Major lesson topics have included harvesting, plant/seed lifecycle, soil health, mulching.
